Emerging Media Through Glass

As IMC 619: Emerging Media & The Market comes to an end, I think it is important to look at the future of emerging media and the most promising trends. There are many innovative products going on the market or in the beginning stages of production that could take emerging media to a new level. One of the most innovative and exciting new products I have read about lately is Google Glass.

Google Glass is Google’s first attempt at breaking into the wearable tech market. It is a headset that you wear like a pair of eyeglasses, however it does more than just help you read! The headset has a small prism-like screen tucked into the upper corner of the frame that keeps you constantly plugged in to your e-mail, calls and other notifications so you don’t have to miss a beat. In other words, its like having a computer right in front of your face 24/7… or as long as you are wearing the glasses. According to Google Glass, their product lets consumers be active explore their world and live lighter. The production is currently in an “exploration” phase. The select number of people that walk around with the product already are participants of Google’s beta program and are referred to as “Glass Explorers”. In order to become a member of the Explorer Program, there is a steep price of $1,500 and consumers must present Google with a reasoning on why and what they plan to do with the device. Glass Explorers are the first to make, to tinker, to create, to shape, and to share through Glass. Here is a link to some of the featured explorer stories thus far… take a look and decide whether this product would be a potential purchase of yours. What would you use it for? Do you think this product will be successful?
